The photograph you wish existed

Most of us have a place we always meant to see: the Northern Lights above a fishing village, a turquoise lake in the Rockies, a sunrise seen from orbit. Some trips are out of reach because of time, health, budget or simply the calendar. Statistics Canada's National Travel Survey shows how much of Canadians' travel stays close to home: in the first quarter of 2026, 69.1 million of the 78.7 million trips Canadians took included a domestic visit. The places people dream about sit far outside that picture.

A carefully built image cannot replace being there, and I would never say it does. What it can give you is something real to hold: a print on the wall, a gift for someone who has everything, a portrait of yourself in the place you always wished to stand.

What the free consultation covers

• The place, the season and the hour of the day, so that the light can be right.
• The look: a photographic composite, or a painted artwork built from the same scene.
• How the image will be used, whether on a screen, as a gift or as a large print, and what size is needed.
• What to send, and whether extra photos would help.

What opens up once we talk

A single image is only the beginning. People often go on to ask for a series of the same person in different places, a family portrait uniting relatives from several countries, a painted edition of a favourite scene for a large print, or an image that marks a milestone such as an anniversary or a retirement. If you would like orbit, NASA notes that the International Space Station crew sees 16 sunrises and sunsets every day, which means there is a great deal of light to choose from.

The problems this solves

Your own face, faithfully. Fully automatic generators tend to reinterpret facial features. My process starts from your photograph and keeps it as the source, so the result looks like you.

Light that agrees with itself. Research published in the journal Perception found that viewers often fail to notice lighting mismatches, but a picture still feels off when contact shadows, edges and colour do not agree. I check all of them, so the image holds up in print.

One person, start to finish. You deal with me directly, from first message to final file, and you know what you are getting before work begins.

Clear rights. According to the Canadian Intellectual Property Office, copyright exists automatically when an original work is created, so your source photo remains yours. How the finished image may be used is agreed in writing before work starts. See the CIPO copyright FAQ for the official explanation.

How to request it
